Development of basic drawing skills in various media and the exploration of printmaking techniques
Development of basic drawing skills in various media and the exploration of printmaking techniques
Class Description:
Class is for non-majors. Course covers observational drawing and printmaking techniques. Students are guided through the basics of drawing for the first half of the class and then to 4 types of printmaking techniques. Students learn perspective, shading, composition and ink stippling. For the printmaking section, students learn drypoint, woodcut, linocut color reduction, collography, and monoprints.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
The students enrolled in this class are non-art majors. The general goal is to encourage an understanding of art and the process of making art through practical and theoretical investigation.
1. The students will have general knowledge of:
The meanings of art; how art has played a role in history; how art has changed across time and culture; how to experience art by hands-on experiences.
2. The students will be able to:
Develop confidence in approaching personal imagery and style; acquire an awareness of contemporary and historical art prints and drawings; improve drawing skills, building on perceptual abilities that use observation, measurement and perspective; develop verbal and analytical skills related to art making.
3. The students will value:
Drawing and printmaking approaches to art making; the processes involved in the skills of drawing and the technical involvements of printmaking; the role of graphics in society
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODS
The drawing section will focus on:
·Basic form and composition
·Contour and creating dimension with line
·Perspective and drawing ellipses
· Developing tone and value using shading, lines and stipple work
·Using line expressively
·Drawing as a final product and preparatory element for printmaking
The printmaking section will focus on:
·Creating relief, intaglio and collagraph plates
·Printing an edition from your plate and at least one edition varieé
·Hand drawn, photographic and computer generated print images
This introductory course is designed to enhance the students’ facilities for "seeing" in an artistic sense and make art by hands-on experiences. The students will also be able to describe the process of art making and use terminology related to specific processes through written assignments and gallery reports.
This course presents basic skills and vocabulary necessary to integrate their own imagery to illustrate verbal content through the process of traditional and contemporary hands-on art making. This will be accomplished specifically through drawing and printmaking.
